Current Events

lightning in a bottle.

DRAWN, as if i had some choice but to deny my covert involvement in the political happenings of the past year. no one has been able to truly extricate themselves, at least no one with access to a tv or the internet, and especially no one who works in retail.

in the months before the election i watched as facebook settled in to its new reality as a vacuous wasteland of political opinions/articles passed for fact. no one appeared to be having fun anymore. posts fraught with anxiety and desperation became commonplace. facebook became the boogieman and the scapegoat for an election deemed stolen by millions, and devalued by millions more who watched helplessly while clinton stacked (for some reason) completely meaningless popular votes. the biggest proprietor of “fake news” was social media. in particular, people took aim at the facebook feed instead of themselves. people simply stopped taking the time to discern if what they read was real journalism or propaganda circulating as political click-bait. somehow, this became facebook’s fault.

as distance between the present and the election grows, facebook has quieted to a rolling boil of ignorant and entitled people from all parties seething and searching for someone to absorb and accept their political opinions as objective while maintaining the opinions of the other make them sub-human.

as a result, many who expressed reserve about some of the more polarizing opinions were attacked by people with whom they agreed. discord was sown, and it grew rapidly. a country divided, a country too angry to look itself in the face and see itself for what it has become. we are an act first, think second culture. click-bait centered and too busy instagraming pictures of our lives to live them. we don’t think we deserve donald trump. and that attitude is what allowed his meteoric rise to the forefront of the american political and cultural psyche.

and with this i make my foray into the fray. in a tv/internet world where sports still draw the most (eye)balls and facebook feeds and comedy about the news are used as a primary news sources, it feels as though there is no place for a young person with a bag full of anachronistic drivel. i really do wish to stay out of this whole political firestorm but as this whole “catastrophic” ordeal has unfolded in what feels like half-time, i have found a small crevice in which i can not help but insert myself and hopefully a tiny bit of ramshackle journalism (complete with outside sources!). it seems there might be a place for a voice like mine among the weeds. here we go.

opinion: no. no way. and this “all republican” stranglehold on the government is about to hit some weird snags. congress was able to accept the idea of a donald trump presidency months ago and they have been quietly planning in the background. they were well aware that the incendiary president-elect could, and possibly would, try in earnest to make his wildest campaign promises a reality. congress believes they can control trump, and trump believes he can do whatever he wants.

the question remains, is everybody over there on the same page? how will the proponents of small government and limited spending justify bloated budgets and increasing deficits? where the hell are they going to get the money to build that border wall with mexico? are they actually going to do that? trump keeps saying he will make mexico pay for it, but i’m not sure wall-supporters understand what that sentence actually means.

most of the time we cant make ourselves do what we need for ourselves (think exercise, eating for your health, etc), so how the hell are we going to make a country, an esoteric conceptualization of a group of people, do anything? and when that wall does not get funded by mexico, is trump going to give up, because that does not seem to be his style? do you see the writing on the wall, no pun intended? the budget does not balance. the border wall is just one of the more obvious examples of misdirection and rhetoric used by the trump campaign to appeal to fears held by many in the country. the fact that we refuse to admit we are afraid might speak volumes as to our path to recovery.

meanwhile, in the foreground, the foundations of our constitution and sense of self (as well as our privacy) are being further undermined with each passing day.

as long as the president-elect stays classy and has access to twitter we will be just fine.

the guy sounds like your teenage brother taunting you. and just like your little brother, say what you want about him. nothing sticks.
